Asylum in Stoke: Two months hiding in lorries
(Broadcast on BBC Radio Stoke, September 2014)
AN ASYLUM seeker living in Burslem has told BBC Radio Stoke that the government's refugee application process is "too slow" and costs the tax payer too much money.
38-year-old Pedram spent two months hiding in lorries to reach the UK from Iran -- where he claims he was imprisoned and abused for publishing documents criticising the government.
He says he wants to work in the UK, to stop depending on government funds for accommodation and his 35 pound a week living allowance.
But the Home Office has said the deadline for his case to be dealt with is 18 months after he arrived in the UK.
Our reporter EMMA THOMAS heard his story....
(The Home Office says applications require thorough consideration but they aim to conclude all cases as quickly as possible. )
