Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 14th November 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Thank you to our latest three supporters on Patreon! Wow, thank you so much. First up our new Producer PHILIPP STÜGER. And our new Executive Producers MAZ SHAR and DON MCALLISTER.
Kicking off today with three reasons to be cheerful...
- Formula E Comes To The BBC! The BBC will show coverage of every ABB Formula E Championship race from December.
- In China GAC NE will unveil their all-new full BEV coupe with a giant range of 600km
- 10% Of New Vehicles Purchased in California Are EVs
TESLA DRIVE FOWARD BATTERY DEVELOPMENT
- A quick history of the batteries which have powered Tesla. First up the cylindrical cells called 18650 (18mm by 65mm) are lithium ion batteries the same shape as a AA battery. Then Tesla and Panasonic moved to a new size, the 2170, for the Model 3. The cells are larger and more energy dense. That still seems very new to me as production only started in 2017 and new automation has come to the Nevada Gigafactory to increase production.
- Now today there's a new CNBC interview with President of Automotive Jerome Guillen, which I actually saw because Elon retweeted it so I'm guessing he's happy with the content, and Jerome commented on the design of the cell: "We are improving the design of the cell. The design of the cell is not frozen. It evolves and we have a nice roadmap of technology improvements for the coming years.”
- There is a target of $100/kWh at cell level which Elon believes Tesla Panasonic will be at by the end of the year, and then the next target is to achieve that at pack level.
CAR BATTERY PIONEER SAYS NEW BREAKTHROUGH WILL LOWER COBALT USE
- "The scientist-turned-entrepreneur behind a battery technology adopted by chemical giants BASF SE and Johnson Matthey Plc is back with another invention -- one he claims will boost electric vehicle performance for years to come." according to Bloomberg: "Kenan Sahin, 77, says his latest innovation reduces the need for cobalt, a key battery material, to only the most critical areas in order to lower costs. Sahin’s new invention, called GEMX, can be used in a number of types of nickel-based power packs and has been granted patents in the U.S., the European Union, China and Japan. The technique could lower cobalt content to as little as 4 percent of battery cathodes, he said, from about 20 percent needed in some now."

VOLKSWAGEN NOMINATES SKI AS FOURTH BATTERY SUPPLIER
- With the South Korean battery cell manufacturer SK Innovation (SKI), the Volkswagen Group has named a further strategic supplier for electric vehicles based on the Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB). SKI will supply the batteries for North America and a share of the batteries for the production of Volkswagen Group full-electric vehicles in Europe.
- Within the framework of Roadmap E, the Volkswagen Group brands plan to bring 50 new full- electric models onto the roads by 2025. The Group needs battery capacity in excess of 150 GWh per year through 2025 just to equip its own electric fleet.
- The Volkswagen Group has taken LG Chem, Samsung and SKI on board as strategic partners for Europe. These partners will safeguard battery supplies from 2019. In addition, SKI will cover the Group’s demand on the North American market from 2022. CATL was nominated as the strategic partner for China, and will supply batteries for the Group’s own electric fleet from 2019.

TESLA MODEL 3 COMING TO EUROPE TOMORROW
- "There is great news for the Tesla Model 3 reservation holders and enthusiasts from Europe — Tesla is officially displaying the Model 3 across European countries starting today from Amsterdam, Netherlands. You can sign-up for the event by going to the Tesla website and looking for events near your location " reports XAutoWorld: "Tesla Model 3 reservation holders should check their emails as several European reservation holders are reporting that they received the invite to a Tesla Model 3 Meetup near their location, enthusiasts can also signup. Although you can experience the Model 3 first hand at a Tesla Store near you in Europe, Tesla is not yet offering test drives for the Model 3s"
- So far we have confirmed reports from reservation holders in France, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and Italy.
- Will European cars have CCS Combo charging? I guess we find out soon!

SWARCO EVOLT LAUNCHES NEW PAN-EUROPEAN CHARGING PLATFORM
- "Charging point supplier Swarco eVolt has launched a pan-European new network for its own eVolt charging points as well as third party-manufactured charging stations." writes Fleet World: "Dubbed Swarco E.Connect, the network can be accessed using an app or an RFID access card – purchased for a one-off cost of £10 – with no connection fees for using the charge points in the network. The app also provides details of the location and live status of all charging points via an automated live-map, which can also be viewed online, while a journey planner feature also gives drivers the chance to plan ahead."

BBC TRIALS ELECTRIC BROADCAST VANS
- "BBC News is testing one of the world’s first electric broadcast vehicles. News-gathering operations teams are using the electric van for simple live outside broadcasts throughout London, such as from outside court cases, with the broadcasting corporation also purchasing 100 per cent renewable energy for all its major sites, a move the corporation says is substantially cutting its carbon emissions."
ELECTRIC BACKHOE CUTS CONSTRUCTION NOISE
- "Vehicle and equipment manufacturers aren’t slowing down in their quest to electrify all the things. This compact excavator is the latest to ditch the diesel." according to Geek.com: "Power for the excavator is supplied by an array of Cummins’ 4.4kWh battery modules. The excavator packs eight modules in total — enough to run for an entire eight-hour shift. It takes just three hours to fully recharge. As for the companies who purchase the excavator, they’ll enjoy the reduce maintenance that comes with the change to an electric platform with fewer moving parts. Hyundai’s customers have already expressed their interest in electrified equipment. It’s not just the cost savings that has construction firms pondering the switch. "
