EUROPEAN TESLA MODEL 3 WITH CCS COMBO SOCKET – MODELS S & X WITH CCS ADAPTOR

• Big news in Europe today, Tesla has an early Christmas present for European reservation holders of the Model 3. AND existing Model S and X owners.
• I first saw this picked up by InsideEVs today: "The introduction of the Tesla Model 3 in Europe will bring huge changes to Tesla’s charging policy, as the company is leaning towards implementing the CCS Combo fast charging standard." says Mark Kane: "First of all, the Tesla Model 3 will get a CCS Combo-compatible charging inlet. The Model S and Model X (which don’t have that much space for bigger inlets) will get an adaptor for DC CCS chargers, just like in case of the CHAdeMO adaptor. It should be similarly priced (around €500), but smaller in size. That will open the Tesla Model S, X and 3 to use any CCS Combo fast chargers, including the latest ultra-fast chargers, introduced by IONITY, for example."

 

• Tesla said today in a statement: "While Tesla owners already have access to the most convenient and reliable charging solutions available between home charging, Supercharging and Destination Charging, we want to expand their ability to charge at third party fast chargers. In advance of Model 3 rollout in Europe, we will be retrofitting our existing Superchargers with dual charge cables to enable Model 3 which will come with a CCS Combo 2 charge port, to use the Tesla Supercharger network. Model S and Model X customers will continue to have full access to the network and a CCS Combo 2 adapter will soon be available to purchase, if desired"

 

• This has been a long standing rumour here in Europe and it think it's great news all round. And we had rumours on Reddit from one Tesla owner who got chatting to a service engineer from Tesla who said he was busy doing the preparatory work for the Supercharger upgrades - as they will all now have dual cables. But that was Reddit, and whilst we heard that over the summer from a reliable poster, you have to be cautious.

 

• Speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Tesla’s head of global charging infrastructure, Drew Bennett, said: “There’s a lot of excitement about Model 3 coming to Europe and charging is always part of that conversation. We’ll be continuing to invest in our network – that’s a huge part of the ownership experience. But we’ll be enabling our owners to have access to the CCS networks that are starting to grow in Europe, so the Model 3 will have a charge port for the CCS standard and we’ll also have an adaptor for Model S and X. All existing Tesla customers will be able to use the Supercharger network still, but these changes will allow people to venture outside the network – this is something that could really help our owners and is really exciting for us to be able to say that about the infrastructure in Europe..”

 

• Of interest is that whilst the Tesla plug is the same shape as the Type 2 plug, clearly something happens there in terms of how it communicates with the car - way above my level of knowledge! - so when you pull up to a Supercharger in a Model 3 you have to use the new CCS cable. Whilst S and X drivers use the existing ones. Here's a thought - can each supercharger charge two cars at once?

 

• We also know that the Model 3 might be able to take a charge rate higher than we've seen so far. Will it be capped at 120kW or, once a Model 3 is plugged into something like a 175kW Fastned or IONITY 350kW ultra fast charger, will it go higher than 120kW?

 

• Will the U.S. be able to use the adapter? Electrify America are building their own ultra fast chargers but have committed to the CHAdeMO plug for now as well as DC Fast Charging.

 

• Will all Tesla's move to the CCS Combo 2 standard, which can take far more current than cars needs right now? I would guess yes, and they'll update the Superchargers too, everywhere by China where I can't see the GB/T standard going away. Plus China has committed to work on their own new plug based on the CHAdeMO standard. Which if China goes for it, guarantees a future for CHAdeMO. So maybe that's how we shake out, two main plugs in the next 5 to 10 years?

 

• Will Tesla open the network for other car manufacturers to buy their way in? Investors in Tesla like the exclusivity of the Superchargers and the benefit they provide, but Elon has long said moats are dumb. Remember, his mission is to get us all driving EVs and not do solely what makes Tesla stronger.

KIA EYES INCREASED EV PROFITS

• Making profit out of electric cars is not easy, but Kia reckons it will break even in Europe on its range of two battery-electric cars within two to three years – even at the competitive price of £30k for the e-Niro unveiled recently. Kia plans to sell 30,000 electric cars annually by 2020/21.

NEW KIA SOUL EV TO GET 39-KWH BATTERY FROM NIRO EV

• "At 39kWh, the next-gen Kia Soul EV will go a whole heck of a lot further per charge than the electric Soul available today." reports Eric for InsideEVs: "Slated to be shown at the LA Auto Show, the next-generation Kia Soul, in electric form, will boast a much bigger battery than it does today."

VW SUPERVISORY BOARD APPROVES THE PLANS THIS FRIDAY

• Gunnar Kilian, Member of the Board of Management: "Emden and Hanover are to be further model plants in Germany. Together with Zwickau, they will form the largest network for the production of electric vehicles in Europe”.
• The production of the models currently manufactured at Emden and Hanover is to be transferred step-by step to other Group plants against the backdrop of the reinforcement of the electric offensive. Details of plant allocation are to be decided on by the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen on Friday.
• Between 2019 and 2021, Volkswagen will train almost all of the 7,700 employees at the Zwickau plant for the production of electric vehicles. The expense is immense – but justified. Ultimately, Zwickau will play the pioneering role in production of the Volkswagen ID. Family.
• 3,000 employees will receive basic e-mobility skills. This two-day training unit primarily applies to assembly workers. The course is held in-house and utilizes virtual reality (VR) and virtual assembly training (VMT) technologies.
• 160 employees will receive so-called high-voltage (HV) training. This lasts for up to 18 weeks and culminates in one of three certificates: managerial electrical specialist (vEFK), electrical specialist (EFK) and electrical specialist for specified activities (EfffT).

 

ELECTRIFY AMERICA OPENS FIRST FAST EV CHARGING STATION IN CALIFORNIA

• The Country Hills Shopping Plaza in Torrance, California will be the first DC fast charging station to open in the state as part of Electrify America’s plan to install approximately 160 charging stations in California by June 2019.
• Through its Cycle 1 California ZEV Investment Plan, Electrify America is developing a network of electric vehicle charging stations along highly traveled highways and in six California metropolitan areas which include Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose.
• Target locations or “target zones” for each station were identified using Electrify America’s proprietary station siting methodology, which projected the locations where DC fast charging stations will be most needed by 2020.
• The planned network in California will consist of more than 600 DC fast charging dispensers at approximately 160 charging station sites. In addition, Electrify America will build approximately 1,500 charging stations featuring Level 2 chargers at workplaces and multiunit dwellings in its six metropolitan markets. The network will deploy cutting-edge technology to deliver customer-centric charging to consumers safely and conveniently, and it will connect California to the Electrify America national network connecting 42 other states.

 

 

Aaaaand finally, not so fast for Teslaquila. There's a body called the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) and they're not happy. You see, Tequilla is a protected word and Teslaquila is too close.
