Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 26th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.

Welcome to the podcast new Patreon subscribers. BILL BURGAR and new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER KIRIVAN YAM

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

BMW INEXT, I4 AND IX3

  • BMW wants you to know it’s getting serious about electric vehicles. After all, it’s not every day an automaker sends out its own “spy” photos attached to a press release divulging various details." Says Christopher Smith for Motor1.com US Edition: "Getting a bit more specific, the photo above (and the gallery below) features the almost-primetime-ready BMW iX3 SUV as well as the i4 four-door and iNext crossover. Of these, the iX3 garners our immediate attention because it’s confirmed as entering production next year. That means we’ll likely see the compact SUV revealed later this year, showing us its solid kidney grille and fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and boasting a range of over 249 miles. BMW also says it can access 150-kilowatt charging stations, which supports the rumours we’ve heard that it can be fully recharged in just a half hour. BMW does tell us the i4 should have a range of over 373 miles while also offering enough punch to hit 62 mph in four seconds flat. We’re also told that i4 production will begin in 2021."

MACK SHOWCASES LATEST HYBRID CLASS 8

  • "Mack Trucks announced it recently displayed its second-generation zero-emission capable Class 8 drayage truck at the California Air Resources Board’s Low Carbon Transportation Heavy-Duty Showcase in Sacramento, Calif." says TT News.com: "The plug-in hybrid-electric truck, which is based on a Mack Pinnacle axle back daycab, has been operating in revenue service with a customer drayage fleet for more than 12 months. he second-generation truck relies on an adaptive self-learning algorithm — that records the load, speed and power and torque demand, analyzes that data and combines it with GPS location — to identify and create zero-emission zones in order to maximize the all-electric operation."

DAIMLER SAYS ESPRINTER READY FOR MARKET LAUNCH

  • "Final winter tests show: the eSprinter is ready for its market launch. #Daimler #eMobility"
  • "With a range of around 150 kilometres when configured with a battery capacity of 55 kWh, the eSprinter is perfectly designed for inner-city short-radius distribution."
  • "Why did we go to Sweden for testing? For several weeks the development team subjected the fully-electric van to a true endurance test. At temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius with icy roads and deep snow, the eSprinter proved its operability under extreme conditions."
  • "The eSprinter is equipped with an integrated fast-charging function with which it can recharge around 80 % of its energy in 30 minutes – this is a great advantage in the daily routine of a van which must function reliably whatever the temperature. #eMobility"
  • "The eSprinter was subjected to its final winter endurance tests before it follows the eVito onto the market in the second half of 2019. Initially, it will be available as a panel van with a high roof and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 3,5t. Maximum load volume is 10.5m³."

TESLA, ELON MUSK WIN DISMISSAL OF LAWSUIT OVER MODEL 3 PRODUCTION

  • "A federal judge in San Francisco dismissed for the second time a securities fraud lawsuit brought by Tesla Inc shareholders alleging that the company made misleading comments about the production status of its Model 3." Writes Alexandria Sage for Reuters: "U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer sided with Tesla, granting the electric vehicle company dismissal of the lawsuit brought in October 2017. It said shareholders bought “artificially inflated” shares because Musk and other executives misled them with bullish statements about the production ramp of the Model 3, failing to disclose that the company was “woefully unprepared” for the vehicle’s production."

TESLA MODEL 3 REGISTRATIONS IN WESTERN EUROPE: FEBRUARY 2019 BY MARKET

  • "Further exploring Tesla Model 3 sales data in Western Europe, industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) presents the registration numbers for 12 countries in February." Says InsideEVs.com: "Germany and Norway are the top two markets by volume, followed by the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. There is a high correlation between countries with the highest number of registrations and highest number of orders. February, as the first month of volume deliveries, was just a preview of what is happening as the numbers for Norway alone are already similar to all of Europe the past month, with a few days to go still."

https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-registrations-february-2019/

  • Tom Randall on Bloomberg today said: "Tesla has made a big splash in Europe, but it's still only selling the two most expensive versions of the Model 3. The average selling price is a whopping $72k, according to data from the Netherlands, which is the only country that reports sale prices in real time."
  • Despite a $72k selling price, the Model 3 is on track to outsell the next two best-selling EVs combined this quarter (VW Golf, Nissan Leaf), according to public data from Netherlands+Norway+Spain. And the Model 3 only arrived mid-February https://eu-evs.com/
  • Tesla has yet to introduce the long-range rear-wheel drive, standard range, and right-hand-drive versions. In the U.S., the standard range is now by far the most popular, according to data from the Bloomberg tracker.
  • A big question is cannibalization of the pricier Model S and Model X. Europeans prefer smaller cars, and so far the substitution has been significant. That could strain the program and take a bigger hit to margins when the cheaper models arrive.
  • Several people are pointing out that Q1 is typically a slow quarter for Model S & X. Even so, they're seriously underperforming previous Q1s in Norway and Netherlands. There are plenty of things that could explain it, but it's a fair comparison.

TESLA MODEL 3 OWNER SHARES SUPERCHARGER V3 INSIGHTS AFTER FULL CHARGING SESSION

  • "A Model 3 owner recently shared some insights about the behavior of Tesla’s Supercharger V3 following a full charging session. According to the Tesla owner, the company’s new charging solution was able to charge his vehicle from 9% to 90% in just 35 minutes." Reports Simon at Teslarati: "Supercharger V3 immediately showed a charge rate of 255 kW as soon as the Model 3 was plugged in. This rate stayed on for around 15% before the charge rate started to normalize at around 177 kW.
  • 9% – 50% = 12 minutes
  • 9% – 60% = 15 minutes
  • 9% – 70% = 19 minutes
  • 9% – 80% = 25 minutes
  • 9% – 90% = 35 minutes"

SURVEY: DOUBLE PLUG-IN GRANT TO SHIFT COMPANY FLEETS INTO GREENER GEAR

  • "Fleet managers could shift their buying power to support electric vehicles (EVs) in their droves if government hiked the amount of cash on offer under its Plug-In Grant scheme, according to the results of a new YouGov survey seen by BusinessGreen." According to Madeleine Green today: "The survey, which was commissioned by environmental law firm ClientEarth and questioned 368 UK-based fleet managers, found almost three-quarters would be more likely to invest in zero emission electric vehicles if government grants doubled from £3,500 to £7,000 per car. Encouraging companies with large commercial fleets, such as delivery or logistics firms, is seen as a swift way to eliminate a chunk of airborne pollutants from city centres."

'COAL IS ON THE WAY OUT': STUDY FINDS FOSSIL FUEL NOW PRICIER THAN SOLAR OR WIND

  • "Around three-quarters of US coal production is now more expensive than solar and wind energy in providing electricity to American households, according to a new study." Report UK Guardian today.
  • Mike O’Boyle, the co-author of the report for Energy Innovation, a renewables analysis firm: "Even without major policy shift we will continue to see coal retire pretty rapidly. Our analysis shows that we can move a lot faster to replace coal with wind and solar. The fact that so much coal could be retired right now shows we are off the pace. We’ve seen we are at the ‘coal crossover’ point in many parts of the country but this is actually more widespread than previously thought,” O’Boyle said. “There is a huge potential for wind and solar to replace coal, while saving people money.”
