Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 27th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.

FORD FIESTA, FOCUS MILD-HYBRIDS ANNOUNCED FOR 2020 IN EUROPE

  • "Earlier this year, Ford announced it will electrify its every new model in Europe from the all-new Focus onwards, including new nameplates and upgraded versions of existing vehicles. After launching its first-ever hybrid wagon with the facelifted Mondeo, Ford of Europe is now announcing it will bring mild-hybrid variants of the Fiesta and Focus to [Europe]" according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com US today: "the Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid will use a version of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost equipped with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) which replaces the traditional alternator. The BISG will recover and store energy usually lost during braking and coasting in a small 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack. The energy from the battery will be released during acceleration to provide torque assistance for a “punchier, more responsive performance, particularly at lower engine speeds.” Also, it will run the car’s electrical ancillaries."

BYD REVEALS PLANS FOR ALL-NEW E SERIES OF ELECTRIC CARS

  • Chinese automaker BYD officially launched the all-new “e” product series, which will be operated parallel with the “Dynasty” series. There are three sedan models and two SUV models under the “e” series to be rolled out in 2019. Besides, the automaker will start to accept orders of the BYD e1, the first model for the new series, on April 1." Reports InsideEVs.com: "Products under the newly-launched series are developed on the “e-platform”, a BEV platform unveiled by BYD at Auto China 2018. According to BYD’s planning, the “e” series is positioned as a provider of smart BEVs, focusing on quality, cost performance and new intelligent mobility life, and the “Dynasty” matrix, designed to be a forward-looking leader for the BEV era, more highlights technology guidance, car performance and experience."

TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSELLS BMW 3 SERIES, MERCEDES C CLASS IN EUROPE

  • "In its first full month on the market, the Tesla Model 3 shot to #1 on the European sales charts in its so-called luxury mid-size segment. That's quite an accomplishment for Tesla, the electric automaker that hails from California. Even more impressive is that the Model 3 isn't even available in the UK, as right-hand-drive versions have yet to be produced." Writes Eric Loveday for Motor1.com: "The focus here is on sales in the month of February. Those figures for Europe have just become final. So then, exactly how well did the Model 3 do in regards to sales? Well, it outsold some stiff German competition like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That's like a punch in the face to the German automakers right there."

  • Felipe Munoz, global analyst for Jato Dynamics: "As we’re seeing in the US, Tesla is also shaking up the European market. Its long-lasting impact will depend on how quickly the German premium makers, Volvo and JLR react to the arrival of the Model 3 to Europe and how quickly they can bring in their own midsize electric cars.”

TESLA MODEL 3 RIGHT-HAND DRIVE SPOTTED IN CALIFORNIA

  • "A right-hand-drive variant of the Tesla Model 3 has been spotted recently in California. In a photo shared on Reddit by user u/Mr_Salty_Peanuts, a black test version of the midsize sedan is seen driving on I-280 with dealer plates. " reports Teslarati: "The sighting of the RHD Model 3 is good news, particularly for reservation holders in the UK in close proximity to locations covered by Tesla’s current European sales ramp, which only cover left-hand drive territories. Tesla’s online configurators generally open a few months prior to deliveries, meaning if the all-electric car maker’s predictions are correct, customers in RHD locations like the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong will soon have an opportunity to design their vehicles."

TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF MODEL 3 WITH STANDARD BATTERY PACK

  • Fred at Electrek picks up today on the case of the Standard Range Model 3 that isn't to be, at least not yet. "Many buyers of Tesla’s new base Model 3 with Standard battery pack starting at $35,000 are reportedly being told by the automaker that their delivery is being delayed. In some cases, Tesla is trying to upsell them."When Tesla finally launched the standard Model 3 for $35,000 last month, it promised 2 to 4 weeks delivery timelines to buyers. We have yet to see evidence of Tesla delivering any Standard Model 3 to date, but the automaker has delivered many Standard Plus Model 3, which was also launched at the same time. Over the previous day, Electrek has received several reports from buyers who had a delivery date for their Standard Model 3 after they have been told by Tesla that they couldn’t deliver the vehicle."

AUDI A4-SIZED ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2023 TO FIGHT TESLA MODEL 3

  • "Audi is kicking its electrification plans into high gear with the launch of the E-Tron due to be followed later this year by its more stylish sibling, the E-Tron Sportback. These two fully electric crossovers will be joined by the Tesla Model S-rivaling E-Tron GT in the second half of next year, with a road-going Q4 E-Tron in the pipeline for a late 2020 launch." Reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com US today: "the aforementioned E-Tron GT (pictured here) will be joined by a smaller sedan similar in size with the A4 to go up against the Tesla Model 3. The new zero-emissions model will ride on the same PPE platform as the E-Tron GT, which by the way will have approximately the same size as the A6 Sedan. the A4-sized EV is earmarked for a 2023 release. If that’s correct, it could mean we will see the production version as early as 2022."

COMEDIAN JAY LENO SAYS ELECTRIC CARS 'WILL BE THE FUTURE'

  • USA Today have been talking to Jay Leno: "While Leno has a horde of well-kept antique cars in a custom-built bunker in Burbank, California, the self-proclaimed "big car lover" also has an affinity for modern vehicles with high-tech features."
  • "I have a Tesla Model S. That's the future," Leno told USA TODAY. "I predict a child born today, most likely by the time they're 18, may not have ever ridden in an internal combustion car. I think electric will be the future." "It wasn't until recently with new battery technology that you get hundreds and hundreds of miles (on a charge)," Leno said. "I think we'll see a thousand-mile range pretty soon," Leno said about battery-powered cars.

BIG OIL PUMPS $1 BILLION INTO CLIMATE CHANGE LOBBYING, EXECS LAUGH ABOUT TRUMP ACCESS

  • "Major oil companies have spent $1 billion on climate lobbying that is “overwhelmingly in conflict” with the Paris Agreement, according to one new report. And another report reveals oil execs laughing about their newfound access within the Trump administration." Reports Electrek: "While many oil companies have made a public show of their green energy investments, InfluenceMap reports that ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, BP and Total have used more than $1 billion in shareholder funds since the Paris Agreement on “misleading climate-related branding and lobbying.”
  • Catherine Howarth, chief executive of London-based responsible investment charity ShareAction: "InfluenceMap’s research confirms a widely held suspicion that Big Oil’s glossy sustainability reports and shiny climate statements are all rhetoric and no action. These companies have mastered the art of corporate doublespeak – by boasting about their climate credentials while quietly using their lobbying firepower to sabotage the implementation of sensible climate policy and pouring millions into groups that engage in dirty lobbying on their behalf.”
