VW GROUP NIGHT AT 2019 FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW
"The 68th IAA will officially open its doors tomorrow with the first press day, but as it has been the case with previous car shows, VAG is organizing a “Group Night” on the evening before the actual start. The sneak preview scheduled to last for about 30 minutes will give us the opportunity to discover what VW and its many brands have prepared for this week." says Motor1 - I'll bring you the ID3 tomorrow: "VW is going to introduce the highly anticipated production version of the ID.3. Featured in agonizingly long teaser campaign, the fully electric ID.3 will be the first road-going model from the group to ride on the MEB platform. It’ll replace the e-Golf in the company’s vast lineup and will usher in a new corporate logo."

DO ID.3 BATTERIES COST VW UNDER $100 PER KILOWATT HOUR?
"According to the New York Times, with its MEB platform, VW has already achieved costs of less than 100 US dollars per kilowatt-hour for the batteries in ID.3 due to economies of scale, years before expected. At the same time, VW negotiations with battery maker SK Innovation look shaky." reports Electrive: "Although not expected for years to come, it seems electric cars can potentially already be made more cheaply than their combustion engine counterparts. Although the information came anonymously from the German car-making giant, it seems the Volkswagen is able to make batteries for its mass-market electric car, the ID.3 for less than $100 per kilowatt-hour due to their enormous economies of scale with their MEB platform. This marks the price-turning-point at which analysts have said a mass adoption of electric vehicles is invevitable. Volkswagen has had to use a strategy of diversity in sourcing its battery cells in order to bring up the volume required for its mass-produced electric vehicles. VW very recently founded a battery cell joint venture with the Swedish company Northvolt, and the European companies are setting up a plant in Salzgitter will initially be able to produce 16 GWh and build up to 24 GWh per year. With this planned capacity, however, Volkswagen will only be able to serve a small part of their own electric car production’s demand. "

2020 AUDI A7 SPORTBACK E QUATTRO PHEV DEBUTS WITH 25-MILE EV RANGE
Motor1 says: "We’ve enjoyed the smooth styling of Audi’s A7 Sportback for a couple of years. In keeping with the times, Audi now offers the four-door as a plug-in hybrid. Say hello to the A7 Sportback 55 TFSI e quattro. The e quattro utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and a single electric motor with a peak output of 141 hp (105 kW). the e quattro’s battery pack stores 14.1 kWh of power rated at 381 volts. It’s nestled neatly beneath the rear cargo area without sacrificing interior space, and it can electrically power the A7 for approximately 25 miles at speeds up to 84 mph (135 km/h)."

LAUNCH OF THE SUPERB IV AND CITIGOE IV
SKODA is entering the electromobility era with the introduction of the new SKODA iV sub-brand. The Czech manufacturer’s first electrified production models include SKODA’s first plug-in hybrid, the Superb iV and the Citigoe iV.
In mid-May, the company presented its new iV E-Mobility sub-brand in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava. There, the manufacturer also showcased the two first electrified production models in its history: the all-electric Citigoe iV and the Superb iV plug-in hybrid, which are both set to make E-Mobility Simply Clever.
From early 2020, the flagship Superb will be available as a plug-in hybrid featuring both an efficient petrol engine and an electric motor. The Citigoe iV is the first SKODA production vehicle to be powered exclusively by a 61-kW electric motor. The car effectively has a range of up to 260 km.
MERCEDES-BENZ GLE 350 DE 4MATIC AND GLC 300 E 4MATIC
"Mercedes has pulled the wraps off the plug-in hybrid version of some of its SUVs. The rides are the GLE 350 de 4Matic and the GLC 300 e 4Matic. Mercedes says that the GLE has an all-electric range of up to 100 km thanks to the 31.2 kWh battery pack. The plug-in hybrid can also go up to 160 km/h on electricity alone." according to SlashGear: "The GLE’s battery can be charged at a DC charging station in about 20 minutes from 10% charge to 80% charge. A charge of 30 minutes will take the battery from 10-100%. The plug-in hybrid can tow 3500 kg, and its electric operating range is 106 km with an output of 100 kW. The other plug-in hybrid is the GLC 300 e 4Matic. It has a gas inline-four paired with an electric motor. The electric motor is rated at 90 kW with torque of 440 kW. Total system output is 320 hp and 700 pound-foot of torque. This car can reach 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Its top speed in EV mode is over 130 km/h, and the ride has a smaller 13.5 kWh battery pack. Its electric driving range is 46-49 km."
FORD MUSTANG INSPIRED ELECTRIC SUV
"Some people may get the creeps just to think of a Mustang-inspired SUV. Or of an electric Mustang. That would be heresy. Putting both ideas together would be either terrifying or irresistible. And that is precisely what the Mach E will do when it is presented in 2020. " Says InsideEV about a new video leaked to YouTube: "It shows the prototype of what seems to be a crossover. One that is very low and wide, clearly with sportiness as its main proposition. The vehicle also does not present a visible exhaust outlet. The Mustang-inspired Electric SUV will probably be called Mach E. Investigating recent trademarks, the automotive press name came along another one, Mach 1, so no one was very sure on which would be chosen. Autocar recently talked to Darren Palmer, Ford's Global Product Development Director for Battery Electric Vehicles, and he told the British magazine the car will have the Mach E badge."

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP INVESTS IN IONITY
Hyundai Motor Group today announced its investment into IONITY, a joint venture established by global automakers. Under the agreement Kia and Hyundai, affiliated automotive companies for Hyundai Motor Group, will play a key role in further enhancing the availability of EV charging stations with additional convenience benefits for its customers.
Starting in 2021, Kia and Hyundai EVs will be equipped with 800 volt charging systems to accommodate IONITY’s maximum charging power of 350 kilowatts. Customers will be able to use IONITY’s HPC facilities, which are equipped with digital payment options, to significantly reduce charging times and better facilitate long-distance travel.
IONITY is a joint venture established in 2017 between BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, and Volkswagen Group with Porsche AG. Since its formation, it currently has nearly 140 charging stations in Europe in operation with 50 more under construction. The technology of IONITY is characterized by a charging capacity of up to 350 kilowatts, its use of the universal charging standard Combined Charging System ensures the widest possible compatibility across EVs.
IONITY is expanding its network to 400 fast-charging stations by 2020, with an average of at least one site every 120 kilometers along major European highways.
TESLA OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES IN ICELAND
"Tesla is now officially launching in Iceland with its first (and likely only) location opening in the country and orders for Model S, Model X, and Model 3 can now be placed online." writs Electrek today: "Iceland is perfect for massive adoption of electric vehicles. The island’s electricity generation is already almost 100% renewable, which makes EVs super clean, and being a remote island, petrol is expensive. Albeit being sparsely populated with only ~350,000 people, there’s a significant concentration of population around Reykjavík and people have relatively short commutes that can be covered with most electric vehicles. It helped the country increase EV sales over the last few years and while we are only talking about a few thousand plug-in sales last year, it represents over 15% of total cars sales in the country, which is higher than in most other markets around the world."
