Show #577

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 11th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VW ID.3 LAUNCHED

Is this the most important car being shown at the Frankfurt motor show? It has a good case. It's the first car built on VW's MEB platform, upon which all the VW Group cars will be built. And we saw another of those at the show, the Seat el Born, which I prefer in terms of styling.

Why three? The Beetle, then the Golf, and now this. It's a reminder how seriously they're taking this.

The ID.3 is very rounded and soft featuring the new VW

Matrix LED headlights.

4.26m long, 2.76m wheelbase - so the length is the same as a Golf but during the presentation they said it has Passat space.

145 mm longer between axles than the golf, and 60mm higher.

18-20" wheels, including the now standard aero wheels.

NO fancy door handles which present themselves!

Very short overhangs, wheels on four corners. Platform (ground up) design means short bonnet.

The A-pillar is dragged very far forward and then a long sweeping screen.

Skateboard battery design for a low centre of gravity.

Rear wheel drive for balance.

148bhp or 201bhp so it could be a sporty drive.

160kmh/100mph top speed.

7 seconds 0-62mph.

WLTP - 205 / 261 / 342 miles.

100,000 mile warranty on the battery too.

Contrasting roof and boot lid, in black.  Which some say is too similar to the LEAF. With a large glass panoramic roof which can't be opened.

CCS DC Fast charging on the rear quarter panel above the wheel - is the best place for it?

100kw DC charging, upgraded to 125kW and 11kW AC charging.

45kWh, 58kWh and 77kWh. Battery cells from LG Chem.

Extra regen / one pedal mode.

No frunk, under the bonnet is the HVAC and 12volt battery.

Interior - small driver display behind the wheel and it moves with the wheel when you move it for confort. Electric drivers seat, and all animal free products in some trims.

Gear select on the column, a rotary dial to select Park, Drive, Reverse.

Head up Display on some trims.

talking of trims, they shows off a bright orange dual-colour interior trim which wasn't universally loved. They do have more options for toned down trims.

Brake has a pause icon, the accelerator has a play icon.

Large centre 10" screen angles to the driver on a stalk, and that's because the dash is pushed so far away from the front occupants, you'd never be able to touch it.

Almost buttonless - there is temperature, volume, hazards and not much else.

Nice armrests which lift up, they cover storage with two USB-C chargers. The skateboard design means no middle tunnel for the drivetrain.

Two more USB chargers in the back.

In the boot a fake bottom for cable storage, and you open the boot by flicking the VW badge as is standard on their piston cars.

Prices - starting under 30,000 Euros, which should be under £25,000 when you convert to pounds and factor in the car grant.

The 'First' edition is the middle battery of 55kWh.

What do VW say?

"The optional AR Head-up Display sends useful information straight into the windscreen's field of vision, making driving easier for you. For instance, it shows you where to turn or which lane you should take. The projection on the windscreen and what’s happening on the tarmac seem to become one."

"You can choose between 45 kWh, 58 kWh or 77 kWh. And that’s not all: the medium battery can recharge a range of up to approx. 260 miles in 30 mins, in quick charge mode with DC (direct current) with 100 kW performance. And with the biggest battery (77 kWh, net), you can travel up to 340 miles on full charge.¹"

"Fumbling with buttons whilst you drive is a thing of the past. Keep your eyes on the road and control the radio, optional navigation system or your phone easily with intuitive voice control. Just say ‘Hello ID’ – and the system will understand you."

"The stylish optional Matrix LED headlights light up briefly as if they were winking at you, making the ID.3 seem almost human. The ID.Light inside makes you feel welcome immediately. When you start, the vehicle makes a little sound to get you in the mood to get started. When you leave your ID.3, the ID.Light says goodbye with a light signal."

MERCEDES LAUNCHES FE TEAM AND REVEALS VANDOORNE/DE VRIES AS DRIVERS

"Mercedes has launched its ABB FIA Formula E squad, while also unveiling Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries as its drivers and the livery of its Silver Arrow 01 car." writes Autosport: "The new squad will make its debut in the upcoming 2019/20 FE campaign, where it will take over the entry previously assigned to the HWA team that competed as a Venturi customer last season. Mercedes' first FE powertrain has been developed by the same HPP operation that built the V6 hybrid Formula 1 engines that powered its run to five consecutive double world titles."

ELECTRIC VERSION OF RENAULT'S LOW-COST KWID

Edward Niedermeyer has written a long-read for The Drive: ""After The Drive's Alex Roy, and I drove across India in a Renault Kwid that starts at just $4,000, we concluded that the impressive little car was at least as disruptive as anything Tesla has done. we heard whispers that Renault's best cost engineers were turning their attention to an electric version of the Kwid and now that it's been announced it's clear that the breakthrough we were hoping for is actually real." The Drive says: "The Renault City K-ZE has just been announced for the Chinese market, where it offers a stunning combination of electric range and low cost. Starting at 61,800 Yuan, or about $8,700 US Dollars, and its 30kWh Tianjin Lishen battery offers a remarkable 250 km, or 155 miles of NEDC-rated range."

TESLA S OWNERS NUMBER HIGH AMONG NEW CONQUESTS FOR THE PORSCHE TAYCAN

Porsche has been speaking about the Taycan and Tesla Model S comparisons: "Porsche North America president and CEO Klaus Zellmer told Yahoo Finance UK in Frankfurt that he has no problems with people comparing the two electric cars, but for him the real test is how the car fits into the Porsche lineage, as well as people’s expectations for the brand’s first battery-electric vehicle."

Zellmer said: "“Currently, 50% of the people who raised their hand or put down a deposit to get a Taycan already drive a Porsche, somewhere in their fleet, and the other 50% are people who do not drive a Porsche but another car. The biggest group within that 50% that are new to the brand if they sign up to a Taycan is Tesla [owners].”
