Show #650

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 23rd November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

BMW orders more than 10 billion euros' worth of battery cells

"BMW (BMWG.DE) on Thursday said it had ordered more than 10 billion euros’ ($11.07 billion) worth of battery cells from Chinese battery cell maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) (300750.SZ) and Samsung SDI" reported Reuters: "BMW said it had boosted its order with CATL to 7.3 billion euros from an original booking announced in mid-2018 that was worth 4 billion euros. It said the contract would last from 2020 to 2031.BMW said it had also signed a battery supply contract with Samsung SDI worth 2.9 billion euros, valid from 2021 to 2031. BMW said it would get the cobalt it needs for cell production from mines in Australia and Morocco and provide it to CATL and Samsung SDI. It said it would source the lithium from mines including in Australia."

Lexus unveiled the UX 300e

"Lexus finally unveiled its first BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), the UX 300e at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China." says Pedro at PushEVs: "This electric compact SUV has a 150 kW electric motor powered by a 54,3 kWh battery, enough for a NEDC range of 400 km (249 miles). Under the more realistic WLTP the range should be around 300 km (186 miles), on par with the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-Tense and Peugeot e-2008. The UX 300e is scheduled to go on sale in the Chinese and European markets in 2020 – where emission regulations are more demanding -, in its domestic market Japan it’ll only arrive in early 2021."

From the press release: "UX 300e’s Drive Mode Select function lets customers manage smooth acceleration and deceleration according to their situation. Drivers can feel the powerful acceleration and instant torque of the EV powertrain as they push the pedal, and use the paddle shift in a similar manner as engine braking, through four levels of deceleration regeneration―all while enjoying a natural on-road feel. While EVs are naturally quiet, UX 300e adds insulation beyond just the battery and suppresses outside noises such as wind or pebbles which would be otherwise noticeable in the absence of an engine and transmission."

Ford Performance contemplates a Mustang Mach-E for the track

"The GT model might not occupy the top spot in the Ford Mustang Mach-E hierarchy for very long. The company confirmed it's already thinking about how to make an even quicker electric car." according to Autoblog, with the puntastic suggesting of a Shelb-E.: "Ford plans to deliver the first examples of the Mustang Mach-E in late 2020, and it warned the flagship GT variant won't be available until the spring of 2021. The company has time to figure out how to transplant Shelby genes into a Mach-E Shelb-E, or into a different electric car."

Ed Krenz, Ford Performance's chief program engineer, in an interview with British magazine Evo: "I'm looking forward to the challenge of applying the Shelby characteristics to an electric car. The trick for us is the fun-to-drive part, and sustainability in terms of charging. It needs to be capable to go all day on a track day — you can't do 20 minutes and then have to charge it all night"

Lucid’s Atieva Formula E Battery Packs A Punch For Season 6

"We haven’t heard much from Atieva lately, the electric vehicle (EV) technology company from Lucid Motors. That’s for a good reason. It is working harder than ever and just announced a new battery pack for Formula E’s 6th season." says CleanTechnica: "Atieva is the Silicon Valley-based EV technology company held by Lucid Motors: "Atieva just announced it designed the spec battery pack for the entire 24-car Formula E field for the upcoming 2019/20 race season with its partners. We know that the Formula E battery pack was conceptualized, designed, tested, and manufactured by Atieva at its Silicon Valley headquarters in Newark, California."

I must add it's a little naughty for Nicholas at CleanTechnica to ignore the way these batteries are delivered, because it's the British company McLaren Applied Technologies which supplies the Formula E powerttrain, as part of a contract award by the FIA in September 2016. As per Car & Driver: "Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s chief technical officer (and the former chief engineer of the Tesla Model S), has confirmed to C/D that the agreement will be part of a three-way partnership among McLaren Applied Technologies, Lucid, and Sony. Lucid will design and construct the battery and battery management software; Sony will supply the small-format, commodity-sized cylindrical cells within; and McLaren will manage the logistics and trackside support."

MORE CYBERTRUCK FREATURES

Vault Cover - rolls up the rear window and down the vault. It's a motorised cover which stows away when not needed. It's why they needed the rear view mirror to be a camera, becuse with the vault cover in place you wouldn't be able to see behind.

Solar panels - that bed cover could be solar panels as an optional extra. That would give you 15 miles of range a day.

ATV - initially available as a Cybertruck accesssory

200,000 Reservations - $100 refundable deposits.

Model P?

Werner Engel

Shocked at first but love it now.

V10PDTDI

What about body damage in case of a accident it would be very costly on a regular truck you just unbolt the front fenders and you paint a new one then you’re done but this truck is one piece people think a model 3 takes a long time to fix in a Body Shop you haven’t seen nothing yet.

Aaron Bounds

500 miles of EV range for $70K. The bar has been set high.

Dave MIlke

I'm in the US.  Every pickup truck I see now on the street just looks the a thing from the past - I never would have guessed.

Pete Miller

Aside from the impressive specs,  one has to wonder what Tesla has up their sleeve when it comes to manufacturing efficiency due to the competitive price.  That to me is the exciting part, the fact that cost of manufacturing and batteries will come down further, and the Cybertruck is proof of that phenomena.  The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Derrick Lee

Human brain always needs time to get familiar with and adjust to new concept that drastically deviates from something having been around for a hundred years.  The Cybertruck grows quickly on many people.

Mark Evans

Personally don’t like it but you have to admire Tesla for trying this.

Akosipinky

With its design, anyone can vinyl wrap it easily.

Tazzman

Wow, all those  concept photos missed the mark big time. Where is the flux capacitor ??? Only Elon could pull thus off. No self charging.

bryan carter

The truck has grown on me as well. After thinking about all that information you covered at the end of the podcast. It really got me excited about the truck. Only $100 refundable deposit. I think I may order one

Abdul Shahin

It's the reverse for me. The more I see it, the more I think Elon was on acid when they came up with it. This is a terrible looking vehicle.

Malcolm Connah

Form follows function means it will eventually be accepted as the truck to beat. Ford will have to pay more for the battery alone than the cost of the cybrtrk...

Phil Terry

One thing is for sure, that thing pulls up beside you,  you are going to remember it, especially when it leaves you standing at the lights.
