GM ELECTRIC TRUCK DUE FALL 2021
"In an address to the Barclays 2019 Global Automotive Conference Thursday, GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the company’s battery-electric truck will arrive in fall 2021. " says Green Car Reports: "The announcement confirms a timeline that first emerged in a Reuters report last month, citing multiple sources familiar with the plans. Barra also noted that it will be a very capable truck, and that the company will share a lot more about the truck “in the not too distant future.” Some of the same “EV building blocks” will be used, explained Barra, from its electric vehicles in China up to its full-size U.S.-market electric trucks an advantage to its strategy in focusing on a modularized “skateboard” global architecture for EVs and their batteries."
BYD INTRODUCES NEW E3 ELECTRIC SEDAN IN CHINA
"The e3 sedan is another new all-electric entry-level model introduced in China by BYD this year. In fact, it's highly related to the e2 hatchback (available from September)." says InsideEVs: "So far this year, BYD expanded its lineup by six new plug-ins: Tang BEV, BYD Song MAX PHEV, e1, S2 (an entry-level version of Yuan), e2 and e3.The e3 comes with two battery options (35.2 kWh and 47.3 kWh) and a single electric motor version (70 kW), which is all the same as in the case of e2. NEDC range of up to 405 km (252 miles) in top version totally fits within stricter requirements for incentives (although those were halved in June)."

DAF UNVEILS 3-AXLE ELECTRIC GARBAGE DISPOSAL TRUCK
"The Dutch manufacturer DAF now also offers its CF Electric electric truck as a three-axle truck with a gross vehicle weight of 28 tonnes. The first examples will be tested this year as refuse trucks by the Dutch waste disposal companies HVC and ROVA." acccording to electrive: "The drive has an output of 210 kW and a maximum torque of 2,000 Nm. The gross energy content of the battery is given as 170 kWh. DAF has not given an exact range, but it should be sufficient for the usual distances of a refuse collection vehicle. Since garbage trucks usually return to the depot every couple of hours, the Dutch company has attached more importance to the vehicle’s fast-charging capability: It should be possible to charge the electric truck to 80 per cent in 30 minutes – which, with an assumed net capacity of 150 kWh, still corresponds to an (average) charging capacity of 240 kW."

NEW ANALYSIS SUGGESTS UBER ADDING SIGNIFICANTLY TO POLLUTION AND TRAFFIC IN EUROPEAN CITIES
"Uber is adding more polluting car trips to already-clogged European cities such as London and Paris, new analysis by European NGOs suggests—contributing to air pollution and climate change and exploding the company’s sustainability claims." as reported by Green Car Congress: "Data compiled by Euromonitor for European research and campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) shows a surge in the number of Uber drivers (officially registered as private hire vehicles - PHV) in the past few years.In France, which liberalized the taxi market in 2015, the number of reported PHV drivers doubled in three years (from more than 15,000 in 2016 to 30,000 in 2019). The number of Uber drivers in London almost doubled in three years (from 25,000 in 2016 to 45,000 in 2018), accounting for roughly half the total PHV licence number. The analysis estimates that in London and Paris alone, the emissions of Uber taxi services could be as high as 515 kilotonnes of CO2—more than one half a megatonne. This is equivalent to adding the CO2 emissions of an extra 250,000 privately owned cars to the road."

PORSCHE TAYCAN TO USE 100 KW ABB CHADEMO CHARGERS IN JAPAN
"Porsche Japan is hosting a dedicated launch event (from November 20 to December 7) for the Taycan in Shibuya, Tokyo, which will enter the Japanese market in 2020." reports InsideEVs today: "Part of the event is a demonstration of ABB's high-power fast chargers for the Taycan, which turns out to be a CHAdeMO unit with power output "exceeding 100kW". ABB was selected to provide CHAdeMO chargers for Porsche in the Japanese market this Spring, as there is no CCS Combo in Japan.The plan for the future is to develop CHAdeMO chargers with power output above 150 kW, which is still significantly less than in Europe and North America, using CCS - already demonstrated at up to 270 kW (with potential to go up to 350 kW). As there are no technological barriers to go right from the start to 150+ kW, we guess that ABB/Porsche is simply waiting for the commercialization of the higher power CHAdeMO connector."

That’s easy, I’d get Jeremy Clarkson to advertise it by saying initially “If this car is any good I’ll eat my hat”. The cut to Jeremy driving the car on a track whooping and screaming as he puts it through its paces (getting a 0-100kmh in X secs, etc.). Finally cut to Jeremy sitting down to a plate with a hat and some ketchup on it! Fade to black.

If I had to market EVs, I think I would focus on the sheer joy of driving one, with the instant torque and great acceleration and perfect balance and low center of gravity. Perhaps VW could bring back some of their “Farfegnugen” commercials some of us older listeners remember. I would also focus on the markedly reduced cost of ownership in terms of maintenance and fuel costs.
JOHN FRUHWIRTH
I would simply push the experiences/ advantages of owning EVs. Things like:
- Home Charging
- Instant torque
- Advanced tech
- Quiet ride
- Energy efficiency (e.g. 80%)
- Simplicity of drive train (only about 20 moving parts).
I would leave out any references to the superiority of EVs over ICE vehicles.

I'd take advantage of product placements and have an all EV entry in the Fast & Furious movie franchise.

One easy thought is to take those stupid Toyota commercials with the cobwebs on the electric chargers and invert it. Make the gas station the zombie apocalypse and the EV driver blowing by... and of course the driver needs to be Simon Pegg.

To market EVs, I would suggest using humour and/or irreverent celebrity interviews to break through the monotony of other car advertising.

If a manufacturer were serious about transitioning to electrically-driven vehicles, they might consider incentivizing their dealerships to provide EVs as "loaner" cars for their repair departments, and possibly also encouraging driver education programs to use them as student vehicles.
