Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 30th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
A NEW 32GWH GIGAFACTORY WILL BUILD SUSTAINABLE BATTERIES IN NORWAY
"The Norwegian company Morrow Batteries is going to establish a new gigafactory, which will be located in the strategic Agder county. Their aim is to “revolutionize battery production and establish a more sustainable supply to European car makers”." reports Forbes: "Works will start next year. With a total capacity of 32 gigawatt-hour, the factory will consist of four equal modules of 8 gigawatt-hour. The first section is planned to be ready in 2024 and will most likely use existing battery technology, while the others will be developing “the next generation battery cell technology”. Morrow’s lithium sulfur batteries will use deposed materials from the Norwegian oil industry. The production will then differentiate from today’s usual chain, which requires rare minerals and 97% of which takes place on coal fueled plants in China, Japan and South Korea."
MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS ITS BATTERY PACK PLANT IN KAMENZ
"Mercedes-Benz has put the foundation under its electrification offensive with an investment of over €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in nine battery plants in seven locations on three continents. The first and main site is Kamenz near Dresden (Germany) where the company has two plants operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive - first since 2012, and the new, bigger one since 2018." Says InsideEVs: " The cumulative production of xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs) battery packs already exceeded 500,000 and soon, the new plant in Kamenz is expected to produce 500,000 packs annually. Some of them are for conventional hybrids Mercedes-Benz EQ Boost, some for plug-in hybrids (EQ Power) and some for new all-electric models (Mercedes-Benz EQ like the EQC). The manufacturing lines are highly automated and quite amazing, but the plant still employs a lot of people - some 1,300."
"Producing this highly complex lithium-ion battery requires multiple production lines that are approximately 170 meters long, each with more than 30 production stations and with a high number of production steps. Absolute precision is necessary to manufacture the battery systems consisting of 384 battery cells and many other components. The battery cells, for example, are welded with a laser with a tolerance of only 2µm using modern automation technology."

TESLA CEO ELON MUSK GETS $780 MILLION PAYDAY
"Tesla Inc. said In a regulatory filing Thursday that CEO Elon Musk had earned the first portion of a huge performance-based stock options package that ties his pay to Tesla's valuation. " writes TheStreet.com: "Musk was granted 1,688,670 Tesla stock options with an exercise prices of $350.02, according to the filing, and Musk can exercise the options as of today. Under those terms, the stock would net about $780 million based on Thursday's closing price of $805.81. The award was contingent upon Tesla reaching and maintaining a market capitalization of $100 billion. For the remaining milestones, Tesla's market cap must continue growing in $50 billion increments, and ultimately reach $650 billion, for Musk to receive the full potential payout."

TESLA IS SPEEDING UP PRODUCTION AND INSTALLATIONS OF SUPERCHARGER V3
"Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla’s slower deployment of Supercharger V3 was due to production, but it is now ramping up. Musk said that he wants the Supercharger network to cover “95% to 100% of the population in all active markets.” Reports Fred at electrek: "Last year, Tesla finally launched the new version of its Supercharger (V3) to enable a new top charge rate of 250kW. But it didn’t enable the anticipated acceleration of Supercharger deployment. In fact, Tesla is still building new stations with the previous Supercharger technology to this day. Now Musk has confirmed on Twitter that Tesla was still ramping up production of Supercharger V3 and that it will now “speed up”." According to Supercharge.info, Tesla has currently at least 93 stations under construction and over 120 in the permitting phase. At an average of 8.8 Superchargers per station, it would mean almost 2,000 new Tesla Superchargers."

UL CERTIFIES LUMEN GROUP’S WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM
"Product safety watchdog UL has certified Lumen Group’s wireless EV power transfer system to the UL 2750 standard (Outline of Investigation for Wireless Power Transfer Equipment for Electric Vehicles). The Lumen Freedom wireless power transfer system uses resonant inductive magnetic coupling between a ground-mounted transmitting pad and a vehicle-mounted receiving pad to charge with no wires, and no physical contact between the vehicle and the charger." Says ChargedEVs: "Lumen Group worked with UL’s engineers and lab technicians to test the safety and performance of its wireless charging equipment, including the power source, the ground pad assembly and the attached vehicle assembly."

HUBER+SUHNER LAUNCHES THE RADOX HPC500 CHARGING SYSTEM
"HUBER+SUHNER, a global supplier of electrical and optical connectivity solutions, has launched the RADOX HPC500 – a new addition to the RADOX high-power charging portfolio. The company says it is the world’s first cooled charging cable system that allows continuous charging at 500 A, even in high-temperature environments." According to NGTNews.com: "The HPC500 cable and connector builds on the design of the HPC400 family, as well as the extensive field experience and continuous innovation in cooled cable solutions for EV charging stations. Several improvements and new features make the system ready for existing and future requirements. These enhancements include continuous 500 A charging, an IP67 connector protection rating, the option of a ready-to-use metering system and replaceable contacts for longer service life. Alongside the cooled cable system, HUBER+SUHNER has also developed a new 24 V cooling unit to increase cooling capacity and reduce operational temperatures of the power lines, enabling continuous 500 A charging at environmental temperatures of up to 50℃ The new plug-and-play cooling unit, which is pre-filled with coolant, fits into existing charging stations, significantly reducing installation time. The speed of both the ventilators on the heat exchanger and the coolant pump is automatically adjusted to achieve the most efficient performance, with normal operating levels requiring lower speed, significantly reducing noise level."

E5 CONSORTIUM TO DEVELOP ZERO-EMISSION VESSEL
"Seven companies in Japan have joined forces to establish the e5 Consortium to create zero-emission electric vessels. In the first phase of the project, the partners plan to launch the world’s first zero-emission electric tanker powered by lithium-ion batteries in March 2022. The five values of e5 are electrification, environment, evolution, efficiency and economics. The consortium says it wants to promote sustainable growth of coastal shipping in Japan." According to Electric Hybrid Marine Technology: "It says that Japan suffers from an aging maritime workforce and aging vessels, while the shipping industry needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
BLUEINDY ELECTRIC CARS WILL BE REPURPOSED — OR CRUSHED
"After roughly five years of existence, the BlueIndy electric car-sharing program in Indianapolis had accrued only about 3,000 members. For those keeping track of the balance sheet, that wasn't nearly enough to be a realistically successful business. The innovative program that launched in September 2015 did not go as planned, and it has shuttered operations as a result." Writes Autoblog: "Despite more than 180,000 rides completed, the demand did not meet expectations. The closure leaves the questions of what will happen to the cars, the built-in chargers, as well as program's dedicated parking. According to Fox 59 and WTHR, at least 30-40 vehicles with various levels of body damage ended up in an Indianapolis scrapyard. The shells were spotted stacked on top of each other in neat rows. The batteries and powertrains of these vehicles, if functional, will be repurposed. Furthermore, the cars that were not damaged will be shipped to Los Angeles and used for BlueLA, the company's other American ridesharing program."
