The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMSIS) is one of 14 peacekeeping missions around the world.
UNMISS operates with a strength of more than 13,000 military, 1,500 police and 2,500 civilians, all working in partnership with the people of South Sudan to build durable peace and to protect civilians.
The UN Mission in South Sudan in 2013 opened its gates to protect civilians from raging conflict.
On this International Day of UN Peacekeepers, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, David Shearer outlines the priorities of the mission.
