Anti-Fistula campaign to commence in Wau
The National Ministry of Health in collboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced an anti-fistula campaign for patients at Wau Teaching Hospital. The two-week campaign runs Wednesday 30th May - Friday 15th June.
Doctors are hoping to attend to at least 70 women affected by the condition. In South Sudan it is believed that some sixty thousand women are living with fistula and only about one thousand cases have been treated.
The drive comes on the heels of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula that was commemorated last Wednesday, 23rd May.
Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal that is caused by prolonged obstructed labor in the absence of timely and adequate medical care.
Agum Isaac Daniel, the Acting Director for Safe Motherhood in the National Ministry of Health, says routine corrective surgeries will continue after the campaign.
