Statement by UN Peacekeeping Chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix to UN Security Council on South Sudan
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix has expressed “firm belief” that holding elections in South Sudan in the current political, security and humanitarian environment is “unrealistic".
In a briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Mr. Lacroix decried the continued ceasefire violations and lack of progress in reaching a political agreement.
He welcomed last week’s SPLM National Liberation Council meeting to reunify the party but stressed that all peace efforts must be inclusive.
Mr. Lacroix also announced the deployment of a human rights ‘rapid investigation team’ to verify numerous reports of civilians being deliberately targeted by military allied to the SPLA and bands of youth.
