Commemoration for Aberdeen Victoria Cross winner
A new commemorative stone has been unveiled for a First World War Merchant Navy captain, who was awarded the Victoria Cross after going down with his ship in the Atlantic in 1917.
Significantly outgunned by a German raider ship Moewe on the 10th of March 100 years ago, Captain Archibald Bisset Smith commanded the crew of the cargo ship, the SS Otaki, to fire back.
Born in Cults in 1878, Captain Smith attended Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen - and it's there that the Victoria Cross stone has been laid for his gallantry and devotion.
