Not a bomb: Navy determines unidentified object off Banks Island is industrial equipment, not lost nuke
The Canadian navy has determined that an unidentified object found off of B.C.'s north coast is not a Cold War era nuclear weapon. Sean Smyrichinsky discovered the object near Banks Island. Its location matched the possible point where a Mark IV "Fat Man" bomb went missing after a U.S. air force plane crashed over northwest B.C. in 1950. Using sonar technology and a dive team, the navy determined the object is actually a piece of industrial equipment.
Smyrichinsky speaks to Carolina de Ryk about the experience.
Note: the possible location of the missing Fat Man bomb is still unknown, although records indicate it was a dummy capsule so does not likely pose a risk to the public.
