Women activists have launched their campaign to secure the top seat in the interim Parliament. The women have selected Betty Acan as their candidate for the position of speaker of the Transitional National legislative Assembly.
The peace agreement states that the speaker of the house will be selected from the Equatoria region. Lorna Marekaje, an activist with the South Sudan Democratic Engagement Monitoring and observation program says their decision to front Betty Achan is based on merit, not gender.
