Attack on RNI ship - 29th August 1970
Radio Northsea International (RNI) was the most dramatic of the offshore pirate stations. Born at a time when Radio 1 was established, but commercial radio was yet to come from a cautious Government, the station powered out from its colourful ship, the Mebo II.
The law was not its only adversary, as can be heard here, from 29th August 1970. A business dispute ended up with visits to the ship from those who sought to cut its anchor chain and tow it into harbour, threatening the use of water cannons by means of persuasion. Given this was a radio ship, running commentary of the drama unfolded on air, bringing help swiftly alongside, thanks in no small way to the persistence of the station's listeners calling for help on RNI's behalf. It truly is compelling listening.
