The Simulator: texting behind the wheel
(Broadcast on BBC Radio Stoke, October 2014)
One in five new drivers are involved in a crash within the first six months of passing their test.
But now learners and experienced drivers in Staffordshire are being given the chance to see how their skills behind the wheel are affected by illegal distractions, such as using mobile phones.
The "augmented reality" simulator has been at Newcastle-under-Lyme College today.
Students took to the driving seat, equipped with gear stick, pedals and steering wheel with the challenge of responding to text messages, while trying to stay in control of the computer's car.
We sent BBC Radio Stokes EMMA THOMAS along to take the test....
