Hattie Jacques

Mention the name Hattie Jacques and it more than likely conjures up the image of matron on the warpath in one of the Carry On films. But there was more to Hattie’s career than that as this boo illustrates. Seemingly saddled with her fat girl roles from the start she was Sophie Tuckshop in the 1940s radio show ITMA before moving onto Educating Archie and Hancock’s Half Hour. Films roles included here are, what I think is her best, running Glamcabs in Carry on Cabby. By the 1960s she was starring as Eric Syke’s twin sister in the long-running TV sitcom Sykes.
