Corporal Trudi Johnstone
Corporal Trudi Johnstone,35, an RAF reservist based with her husband at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire has recently deployed to the Role 3 Hospital in Camp Bastion as a Ward Nurse for a 3 month tour of duty.
Corporal Johnstone, who normally works in the Accident and Emergency Department at Lincoln County Hospital, has served with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force for two years and this is her first tour in Afghanistan.
As Ward Nurse she is responsible for the day to day running of a 40 bed ward that provides care for all UK, ISAF and Afghan forces as well as the locally employed civilians and contract workers. She deployed to Helmand Province in mid April and is just starting to settle in to life on camp.
She is already missing her husband Matthew and daughters Paige (16) and Tia (10) but is enjoying working as part of the team and highlights how well the reserve and regular Army personnel have come together for this tour.
For British Forces serving in Helmand the UK Medical Group delivers full spectrum medical care support from the point of injury through hospital treatment to evacuation back to the UK.
The current UK Med Gp deployed on Operation Herrick is based around 5 Medical Regiment providing the pre-hospital emergency treatment, the deployed ambulance service and primary health care, which is a deployed GPs surgery. 33 Field Hospital provides the core staff responsible for the deployed hospital care of the troops in Afghanistan.
