John Major on horses, bandits and Number 10
Former Prime Minister Sir John Major recalls the humorous telegrams he received from a junior diplomat who travelled with an unusual gift he was given in 1993. The President of Turkmenistan gave the Prime Minister a racehorse and against the backdrop of the breakup of the Soviet Union the horse made an epic journey from Turkmenistan through Moscow to 10 Downing Street, encountering bandits along the way. Sir John Major speaks to Matthew Parris for The Spanish Ambassador’s Suitcase, which uses readings from the original diplomatic papers.
