Moyles breakfast anno - and Ben Cooper comment

Episode 491,   Jul 11, 2012, 06:25 PM

He was self-dubbed the 'Saviour of Radio One'. In some people's eyes, likely his own, it was true.

Chris Moyles became the longest-serving breakfast show presenter on Radio One, eventually usurping its first presenter, Tony Blackburn. None of the other twelve acts quite managed that. Maybe not surprisingly for someone of that length of tenure, there was constant speculation about the end of his reign.

The first genuine external signal of his imminent departure, after more than eight years, came from his own mouth on July 11th 2012. Here, he shares his news with his listeners in his typical manner; and Radio One Controller Ben Cooper offers the Radio One perspective to Richard Bacon.

Chris had his critics; and there are those who felt that his show was not appropriate for a publicly-funded broadcaster charged with demanding public obligations. Whatever the 'political view' though, I suspect the majority in radio from both sides of the commercial/BBC fence would quietly concede that he was a gifted communicator and his spell on Radio One breakfast will mature as a memory into a rich chapter of radio history.
