Historically St. Pete with Rui Farias, SPMOH and guest Jon Wilson
Season 2, Episode 296, Dec 16, 05:39 PM
Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where Rui Farias explores the truths, and sometimes the myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Rui is the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History SPMOH. The Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 102 years and we are happy to share those stories with you here on Radio St. Pete.
In today's episode, Rui's guest is former Evening Independent and St. Petersburg Times reporter, hiker, long distance runner and award-winning author, Jon Wilson. Jon co-authored Days of Fear, A Lynching in St. Petersburg. Says Rui: "1914 began as a massively exciting year for St Petersburg. On Jan. 1 at 10am, a young dashing pilot by the name of Tony Jannus lifted a Benoist airboat off the Central Yacht Basin, turned northeast and 24 minutes later completed the world’s first airline flight. Two months later, Al Lang and other members of the Board of Trade convinced the St. Louis Browns to come to St. Pete for Major League Spring Training, beginning a 100-year love affair with Major League Baseball on our waterfront. But in November, all that positive excitement that thrush the Sunshine City into the national spotlight, ended with one shotgun blast. On the evening of Nov. 10, 1914, professional photographer, turned developer Edward Franklin Sherman was murdered, and his wife Mary assaulted, in their St. Pete bungalow home. What followed, were the most horrific and embarrassing events in St. Pete history.
