For decades, visitors and residents driving along Park Street in West St. Pete have a passed some version of a historical marker or sign declaring that Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez came ashore on that spot with about 300 of his men and began what is to be known as first European inland expedition of what is to become the United States. Now, there has been some spirited debates on whether or not Narvaez landed on that spot now known as the Jungle Prada area. After all, it is rumored that was landowner Walter Fuller who placed the first sign to sell valuable historic land, but we do know this location’s history extends well beyond the arrival of the Spanish. And of course, let’s not forget its checked, yet spirited history from the early 20th Century.
