ARTISTS @ WORK w/ Nanette Wiser: Nancy Niss Is A Sewing Goddess
Season 2, Episode 215, Nov 05, 09:07 PM
News Director Nanette Wiser swoons everytime she sees what Nancy Niss is wearing or designing, from bedazzled shoes she makes herself (ripping apart sandals and creating fab fabric with beading on the base) or a bespoke jacket. She is a Master Tailor and Designer who has sewn professionally for 58 years, custom work only along with alterations, for women and she used to design and make furniture. Just recently, she posted this video about a mysterious vintage wool coat, with fur collar, that was obtained through the New York Metropolitan Opera auction, a coat designed and commissioned by Salvador Dali as a sample coat, said to be 1 of 3 made. This video shows the sewing process of restoring this coat to its original condition.

Seen in this photo in Nancy's own words: "This is my newest commission piece for a wonderful client. The fabric is a cotton from the Marcy Tilton fabric collection and the pattern inspiration is also Marcy Tilton, Vogue 8934, with pocket, collar, and sleeve changes. Because of uneven color and size placing of squares, I needed to cut out each piece separately so I could control placement of colors and squares. The contrast accents are silk strips I'd made for another fabulous past project of hers. When working with a lot of different colors and pattern, one must be careful not to have elements get lost in a visual confusion, so the eye may flow along the lines of the garment." WOW!
This multi-talented artist wrote and illustrated a fantasy novel, "The Sand Gates", available in the Manatee County library and on Amazon. She also made a hand-bound edition of the book. She lived in South America, is fluent in Portuguese and has done translating and interpreting for prestigious meetings and events, even the Pan Am Games.
