A Mississippi woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting her boyfriend after an argument escalated when he returned home with McDonald’s for her and her children.
Circuit Court Judge Gray Tollison handed down the sentence on Tuesday, following Alexandria M. Griste’s conviction for imperfect self-defense manslaughter in the 2022 killing of 32-year-old Corey Lyles. Jurors deliberated for three hours before finding Griste guilty after a three-day trial, according to The Oxford Eagle.
The fatal shooting occurred around 12:15 a.m. on June 8, 2022, at the couple’s home on South Lamar Boulevard in Oxford. Griste, 31, called 911 after the incident and was initially charged with first-degree murder.
According to trial testimony, the argument began the evening before when Griste became upset with Lyles for leaving the house without telling her. Text messages revealed the couple arguing over McDonald’s, with Griste sending a message warning Lyles that if he returned, he would be "dead."
When Lyles arrived back at the house, Griste retrieved a 9 mm handgun. She told police she fired three warning shots when Lyles approached aggressively, then fired a final shot through the window of the front door, striking him in the chest.
Griste’s defense argued she acted in self-defense, claiming she was trying to protect herself and her children. “What kind of world is it if a woman can’t protect herself and her children?” her attorney, Steve Farese, said during closing arguments.
However, prosecutors argued that Lyles posed no danger to Griste and that she had provoked him intentionally. District Attorney Ben Creekmore told the jury, “It went from a heart in a text message to a bullet in his heart.”
The couple had a tumultuous relationship, with witnesses reporting they argued publicly the day before the shooting.
Griste was convicted of imperfect self-defense manslaughter, a charge that indicates her actions were not justifiable but lacked the malice required for a murder conviction. She will serve 20 years in a state correctional facility.
