Airing Pain 146: Irritable Bowel Syndrome & Inflammatory Bowel Disease
(Trailer)
Transcript begins
Paul Evans: Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. IBS and IBD. Outwardly similar, but the devil is in the detail.
Prof. Rona Moss-Morris: If you have a condition like Inflammatory Bowel Disease, people assume that the pain is just related to the inflammation and the disease. And we have quite a lot of work now to show that at least around 40% of people continue to experience symptoms when the disease is remitted and there's no evidence of inflammation.
Dr David Bulmer: People have done lots of genetic work and identified a number of genetic mutations that are common in IBD patients. Whereas in IBS the very latest research suggests that actually it's a localised allergy specific to the gut.
Moss-Morris: Your disease is actually well controlled at the moment, and so you don't need to worry about the symptoms. Now, if you've got very debilitating, distressing and uncomfortable symptoms that are stopping you doing things - you worry.
Evans: IBS and IBD. Find out more in Airing Pain from the Pain Concern website painconcern.org.uk, available from the 9th of October 2024.
