RadioStPete.comINSIDER News Director Nanette Wiser chatted with retired doctor and St. Pete resident Carlos García Saúl's about his compelling first novel,  "Caravan of Specters," published by St. Petersburg Press. For those who love historical fiction and medical thrillers, this is for you.

Carlos was brand new to the ‘Burg  and happy to be retired from the cold North. But when he moved here to Coffee Pot downtown with his wife and children, the pandemic hit. As a Harvard-trained surgeon with time on his hands, he started researching another pandemic from another time that took place in his hometown of San Juan in Puerto Rico.  His research and idea for “Caravan of Specters” took off. Four years later, he’s a published author with plans for a series of book signings.

It’s a mystery novel torn from the pages of history, a page-turning adventure story with roots in both tragedy and triumph. An historical thriller set on the island of Puerto Rico in the waning days of the 19th century, Caravan of Specters tells the story of Dr. Bailey Ashford, an American army physician who attempts to discover the reason thousands of peasant farmers, and their families, are dying from severe anemia. Ashford (the main character) and all the military personnel, along with every date, place and fact were 100 percent real. The individual patients, and the people who aid and assist the doctor in his laboratory in the city of Ponce, were created for the book.

In addition to being an author, Carlos enjoys family, fishing and growing exotic orchids in his spare time.  https://stpetersburgpress.com/caravan-of-specters/
