Florida Woman Sentenced to Five Years in Prison After Daughter's Fatal Memorial Day Shooting

A Florida judge sentenced Lakrisha S. Isaac, 33, to five years in prison on Friday following the fatal shooting of Lashaun Rodgers, 41, during a Memorial Day barbeque in Orlando in 2022. Isaac pleaded no contest in May to charges of manslaughter and culpable negligence for leaving an unloaded firearm within reach of her then 10-year-old daughter, who shot Rodgers.

Isaac will receive 128 days credit for time already served. After her release, she will be on probation for three years and must attend a parenting class.

The incident occurred when an argument between Isaac and Rodgers turned physical. Isaac handed her daughter a bag containing a gun, and during the ensuing fight, the child allegedly took out the gun and shot Rodgers. Rodgers died the following day after being taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

During the sentencing, Judge Kevin B. Weiss expressed condolences to the Rodgers family. “To the family, I am so sorry for your loss. Sometimes we find justice in other ways. If this is something you are struggling with, I can tell you that each and every one of us understands your struggle,” he said.

Rodgers' sister, Sharetta Rodgers, conveyed the family's ongoing pain. “Not a second, not a minute, not a day goes by without us living the hurt and devastation, the pain and fear you caused on the family,” she said, as reported by local ABC affiliate WFTV. When asked what message she had for Isaac, she responded bluntly, “F– you.”

Officers from the Orlando Police Department responded to 911 calls about the shooting on May 30, 2022. Upon arrival, they found Rodgers with a gunshot wound to the head. Witnesses, including Rodgers' boyfriend, described an intoxicated Isaac initiating a physical confrontation with Rodgers, which led to the shooting by Isaac's daughter.

Rodgers' boyfriend and other witnesses corroborated the sequence of events, stating that Isaac handed her daughter the bag with the gun, and after the initial punches were exchanged, the child shot Rodgers while shouting, "She shouldn’t have hit my momma." Isaac then reportedly took the firearm from her daughter and pointed it at Rodgers' boyfriend.

The daughter has been held in a detention center for the past two years since a judge denied her request for release on an ankle monitor shortly after her arrest. The current status of her case remains uncertain.
