Maryland Authorities Solve 23-Year-Old Murder Case

After 23 years, Maryland authorities have closed the case of a 50-year-old mother found murdered in her home, naming her daughter's ex-boyfriend as the suspect. The Montgomery County Police Department announced on Tuesday the arrest of 44-year-old Eugene Teodor Gligor for the 2001 killing of Leslie Jennings Preer.
Preer was discovered dead in her Chevy Chase home on May 2, 2001, after she failed to show up for work. Her colleague, concerned about her absence, found blood in the foyer and called the police. Preer's body was found upstairs with apparent trauma, and her death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation remained cold for over two decades until 2022 when new forensic genetic genealogical DNA analysis of blood from the crime scene pointed to Gligor. On June 9, police matched DNA evidence collected from Gligor to the DNA at the scene.
Following this breakthrough, authorities obtained a warrant for Gligor's arrest on suspicion of first-degree murder. U.S. Marshals apprehended him on June 18 in Washington, D.C., where he awaits extradition to Maryland.
Preer's daughter, Lauren Preer, expressed shock upon learning that Gligor, an ex-boyfriend from her teenage years, was the suspect. Lauren revealed that she had seen Gligor as recently as last year at a Washington, D.C., restaurant and noted that he "didn’t seem weird."
"It's been a hell of a day!" Lauren said, "How you could look someone in the eye and know that you committed this crime and act like nothing happened is pretty unreal."
Gligor will initially appear in D.C. Superior Court for arraignment. If he waives extradition proceedings, Maryland authorities could take him into custody within three days; otherwise, an extradition hearing will be set within 30 days.
