LIVE LIFE BETTER with Nanette Wiser Respect your elders has special meaning on June 15th, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Did you know that more than five million older adults experience elder abuse yearly and that one in 24 cases are not reported to authorities? Elder abuse can be physical, financial or emotional. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to raise awareness about the abuse and neglect that older adults face. This day serves as a global call to action to address the challenges and injustices that elderly individuals endure, ranging from physical harm to emotional and financial exploitation. By spotlighting these issues, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day seeks to raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect, foster respect for elders, and encourage policies and programs that protect the rights and well-being of older person. Neglect takes many forms - unusual weight loss, untreated medical needs, bed sores, withholding medications, unsanitary living environment and financial abuse includes unusual or increased spending, frequent ATM visitss, unpaid bills, changes to legal docs or emptying accounts - by a caregiver or even a family member. In Florida, isolating an older adult from family is also a form of elder abuse. You can report elder abuse by calling 911 or the Florida Department of Children and Families 1-800-962-2873.
