In the 1850s, Kansas was a territory, and the battle was raging between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions. In 1855, the Free State Hotel was built in Lawrence, Kansas. There was no doubt about what the hotel represented. It was burned down on the day of its grand opening.

It was rebuilt by Colonel Shalor Eldridge. The Eldridge Hotel now stands on that site, and the original cornerstone of the Free State Hotel remains embedded in the wall of Room 506. It is said that Colonel Eldridge has never left his beloved hotel and is there to this day.

This is Part Two of our conversation with Dennis Sneed about the historic—and haunted—Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence, Kansas.
