Precarious Journeys Down the Nile in South Sudan

Boats are the lifeline of communities that live in the states along the Nile River in South Sudan. The River Nile waters give life in more ways than one. From humanitarian food supplies to medicine and transport for people, the boat operators serve communities that need support.  However, the transport operators who eke a living out of the Nile say journeys down the river are a nightmare. Illegal checkpoints litter the waterways and rent seeking patrons inflict all manner of harm to the operators. Since  2021, up to 30 people have died from skirmishes with armed personnel who impose illicit charges and loot cargo. Radio Miraya's Magdoline Joseph went down to the river to get the voices of the operators who navigate the risky Nile waters in South Sudan.
