Paul Evans: Why, as unique beings, should a onesize fits all
therapy work for everyone?
Prof. Tony Dickenson: People have kind of called it personalised
medicine, which is a kind of strange term.
It mostly relates to genetics, in a sense.
You know, you have your personal genes,
and does that relate to pain?
And that's pretty tough.
What we're trying to think about is more
what's been called precision medicine.
So can you target that pharmacological therapy?
But it would be true for other therapeutic
approaches to particular individuals.
Paul: And why has evolution not always been our
friend?
Dr. Beth Darnall: We want to start to disentangle what pain
has taught us in order to survive and to be able to
reverse some of that, because those
hardwired responses over time actually
amplify pain.
Paul: That's personalised precision medicine and
empowered pain relief.
