Dr. Streicher and Dr. Mary Claire Haver Respond to a “New” Model to Manage Menopause

Season 3, Episode 121,   Mar 28, 12:30 AM

Don't Mess with These Menopause Experts!
When The Lancet, one of the oldest, most respected medical journals, published a series of articles saying that “menopause had been over-medicalized”, that many symptoms were “just in her head” and that overall, women should navigate menopause “without the need for medical treatments” a group of furious menopause experts went ballistic.  In this episode, Dr. Mary Claire Haver and I tell you why there was such a huge backlash from hundreds of menopause experts, and how we took action.

Dr. Haver and I address 4 specific statements from the Lancet article:
  • “Most women navigate menopause without the need for medical treatments.”
  • “During the menopausal transition, women should “challenge self-critical beliefs, which can…make [hot] flushes worse.”
  • “Based on scarce data, we found no compelling evidence that risk of anxiety, bipolar disorder, or psychosis is universally elevated over the menopause transition.”
  • “Over-medicalization of menopause can lead to disempowerment and over-treatment.”
