JJ Elliott Hill, Natalie Elliott Handy & Emilie Elliott - Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver - Heroes Caring for Heroes Series - Episode 1

Episode 1,   Oct 26, 2023, 05:20 PM

We are a trio of sisters supporting our mom who is living with Parkinson's disease, and a husband who survived cancer.  We share the good, the bad, and the completely unbelievable of our caregiving journey. Through storytelling, guest interviews, and helpful information, JJ, Natalie, Emilie and their guests discuss their shared experiences. Viewers and listeners alike will relate to the reluctance, be affirmed in their ability to be a caregiver and gain the courage to step out of the shadows to confidently express their own needs. The goal is to instil hope by giving caregivers permission to share their thoughts and feelings in a safe and nurturing place. A judgment-free space where caregivers can be their most authentic selves, confessing their truths without shame or fear of rejection. Caregivers are sure to laugh, cry, and everything in between but in the end, all will leave feeling better for the journey and part of the sisterhood of care.

Fisher House Foundation is best known for its network of nearly 100 comfort homes where military and veteran families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.  These homes are located at major military and VA medical facilities nationwide, and in Europe, close to the medical facility they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths.  Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room.  Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee.  Since inception, the program has saved military and veteran families an estimated $575 million in out-of-pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centres without charge.  The Foundation also manages an awards program recognising programs that support military and veteran communities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses, and children of fallen and disabled veterans.
