Warming ghost

"Temperature is the element I focused on when composing this piece. The source recording is of fire, specifically a fire that is constantly burning. It’s fall in Seattle, which means nights are starting to cool down, and I’m adjusting to falling asleep with a blanket on again. I recorded flute through a delay and reverb pedal direct to cassette tape - tape has a particular saturation that is often described as warm, and the tape I used was an old 1980s Ghostbusters soundtrack that had been sitting in the back of my car for months, soaking up the summer heat. That heat caused some tape warble and a few dropouts - just classic cassette funk. I dropped the recording into Ableton and played it back through the software sampler Granulator II with four second grains and some slightly randomized playback position (called Spray) to create warm ambient tones that I hope will remind the listener that there is always warmth inside you."
