Climate Crisis and Inequality: Sustainable Transportation and a Growing Yacht Industry in 2050
Aug 05, 2023, 10:47 AM
In the imagined scenario of the year 2050, where the world has impressively reduced personal vehicle usage by 75% to meet the mandates of the Paris Agreement, as currently proposed by the WEF, it is highly unlikely that a vast majority of the global population would be enthusiastic about witnessing an ever-expanding SuperYacht Fleet dominating the open seas. With over 2 BILLION people having lost their ability to own personal vehicles, the concept of a legal SuperYacht Fleet might appear not only impractical but also unjust.
While yachting may seem to exist in a league of its own, it becomes increasingly apparent that this perception is primarily fueled by those within the industry who profit from its growth. The disparity between a reduced vehicle ownership and an expanding luxury yacht fleet highlights the potential inequities and reinforces the notion that the industry primarily serves the interests of a select few rather than the greater good.
Join Captain Nigel Marrison and YIR in this discussion about perception, reality, and how there is a certain arrogance within the industry that might lead to the downfall if not curbed in. There is still time, but that time is growing short!
