Is Lori Vallow Daybell Competent To Stand Trial Again?

Episode 10,   Aug 08, 2023, 05:00 PM

In the latest episode of "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer brought into focus the extradition and re-trial of Lori Vallow Daybell. Vallow is expected to be extradited to Arizona by the end of the year to face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder against her ex-husband, Charles Vallow.

Brueski raised doubts about the necessity of another trial given Vallow’s existing life sentence and her questionable sanity. He wondered whether the emotional toll on the families involved was worth enduring another trial when it is unlikely that Vallow will fully comprehend the gravity of her actions. Coffindaffer, however, believed that the prosecution team would have consulted the victim's family, who likely supported the decision for another trial.

While acknowledging the impracticality of the process, Coffindaffer commented, "From a practical standpoint, it makes no sense. But from an emotional standpoint, it does make some sense to me… that family wants to see her convicted of that murder as well."

In addition, the hosts dissected the audacious statement made by Vallow's attorney during the trial, who claimed that Lori is essentially a person of love. The defense lawyer's statement, filled with praise for Vallow as a loving mother, seemed bizarre to Brueski. He questioned if the attorney was trying to make a personal appeal or seek national attention.

Coffindaffer described the statement as "odd at best," and suggested that it could have been the attorney's final attempt at providing some positive context for Vallow's character after a weak defense during the trial. "It was hard to listen to and, uh, I saw it as a showmanship move," she added.

Echoing Brueski’s sentiment, Coffindaffer deemed the defense attorney’s statement as unlikely to sway the judge’s opinion, stating, "It was just a moment, another moment in this trial slash sentencing Lori Vallow case that just, you know, I think left everybody just shaking their heads."

Coffindaffer also pointed out that the defense’s statement may have influenced Vallow, implying that she may have instructed her attorney on how she wanted to be portrayed. "Her fingerprints were on that," Coffindaffer concluded.
