Mom gets life in prison for locking 6-year-old son in urine-soaked closet, starving him to death
Episode 116, Aug 04, 2023, 11:00 AM
Elizabeth Archibeque, a 29-year-old mother from Arizona, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder and abuse of her 6-year-old son, Deshaun Martinez. In 2020, Deshaun was found dead, weighing only 18 lbs, after being locked in a urine-soaked closet and starved.
Archibeque pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse, expressing some remorse during the court proceedings. Her lawyer requested the possibility of parole after 35 years, but the judge, Ted Reed, deemed her actions as "heinous, cruel, and depraved" and sentenced her to life imprisonment.
Flagstaff police detective Melissa Seay testified about the horrific conditions in which the children were found. Deshaun's 7-year-old brother was also malnourished, and both boys had been confined to a tiny closet for about 16 hours a day for a month, surrounded by the stench of urine.
The evidence photos were deemed too disturbing to be shown during the sentencing hearing. Archibeque admitted blame for her son's death and accepted the consequences of her actions.
