RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews.

This week Vidar was reviewing a story of tenderness and heart, portraying the resilience of the bonds of womanhood and sisterhood in one small Louisiana town with the audio described performance of Steel Magnolias at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham on Wednesday 22 March at 7.30pm with description by professional Audio Describer Theo Hornsby-Walsh.

The heartwarming, deeply moving comedy-drama Steel Magnolias takes to the road in 2023 in an adaptation from the film's writer, Robert Harling and a tribute to his late sister.

Steel Magnolias charts the lives of six small-town women through times of great hardship, great joy and the messy bits in between, the play balances Harling's trademark witty dialogue with moments of despair for a profound portrait of the human condition. Set in the Chinquapin salon, Louisiana, the play chronicles salon owner Truvy Jone's interactions with her regulars and friends. Their lighthearted conversations and true friendship, go a long way in helping them cope with the difficulties of life.

Follow the trials and tribulations of six fierce and sassy women as they set the world to rights in their small-town bustling beauty salon. Unwind with a fabulous cast, including Laura Main (Call the Midwife), Lucy Speed (The Archers, The Bill), Harriet Thorpe (Absolutely Fabulous, The Brittas Empire), and Diana Vickers (The X-Factor, Dial M For Murder, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) as they set up shop in this raucous classic, comedy masterpiece.
