Up to 16 million square meters of land remains uncleared of mines and unexploded ordnances across the country. This was revealed by the Danish Refugee Council – an organization involved in demining activities in commemoration of Mine Action Day today – commemorated annually on the 4th of April to raise awareness on the importance of eradicating land mines. The Danish Refugee Council identifies areas in Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria and Upper Nile state as most contaminated from past wars and conflicts. Team Leader for Risk Education program in the Danish Refugee Council, Taban Benson says the organization is using mobile response teams to reach communities in identified areas.
