Hear Judge Boyce's Ruling: Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell to Be Tried Separately

Mar 07, 2023, 02:00 PM

Seventh District Judge Steven Boyce ruled that Lori Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell's murder cases would be severed, meaning they will be tried separately. Chad Daybell waived his right to a speedy trial, giving his lawyers more time to review DNA evidence. Lori Vallow Daybell, however, did not waive her right to a swift trial, so her case will proceed as planned on April 3. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to murder, conspiracy, and grand theft charges in connection with the deaths of Lori Vallow Daybell's children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan, as well as Chad Daybell's previous wife, Tammy Daybell. The prosecution had pushed for the couple to be tried together, but the judge ultimately decided that severance was the only option. The couple allegedly used doomsday-focused religious beliefs to carry out the murders and further their plot to steal social security funds and insurance money. If convicted, they could face the death penalty.
