A Florida bodybuilder has been charged with his ex-murder girlfriend's after police discovered her skeletal remains in a burn pile in the backyard.

A bodybuilder from Florida has been arrested for murder after charred remains were discovered in a backyard burn pile.

Katie Samantha Baunach, 43, was last seen on September 29 and is presumed dead; her ex-husband, Ian Christopher Baunach, has been charged with murder.

Katie had previously accused Baunach of abusing one of their children before she vanished. On the grounds of domestic violence, she was granted an injunction against him on behalf of their child.

Katie's disappearance was reported to the police by a concerned friend who contacted the Hendry County Sheriff's Office.

Katie had dropped off her two children at a friend's house on September 29 at approximately 9 o'clock in the evening, and was planning to pick up some of her personal belongings from Baunach's residence, as her friend later told police.

Since then, no one had heard from her.

The police found her car the next day in front of Baunach's house with her purse still inside.

When police returned to the house with a search warrant, they discovered "evidence that a homicide had occurred there," as stated in the federal criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

After applying luminol, police allegedly discovered blood and signs of a struggle in the trunk of Baunach's car.

The complaint states that "the wall was damaged and exposed screws in the wall where an object appeared to have previously been mounted."

Law enforcement officials claim to have discovered 13 silencers and her wedding and engagement rings inside a safe.

On October 1st, Baunach was questioned by the police. According to the complaint, on September 29, the ex-bodybuilder allegedly saw Katie after she called him and "said she needed gasoline for her vehicle." He claimed to police that an argument broke out between them after she arrived because of another woman, and that he subsequently went to bed to avoid further conflict. He claims that when he awoke, she was no longer there.

The complaint states that when police questioned him about the blood in his car, he said it was "due to groceries that he had transported."

As stated in the complaint, during the interview Baunach stated that they "did not have a body" of Katie Baunach and denied that she was a missing person.

During a search of Baunach's property on the same day, police allegedly found "a fragment of a human mandible with an intact tooth in a fresh burn pile and discovered a blue fifty-gallon barrel near the burn pile which reeked of decaying flesh." Additional human bone fragments were found by law enforcement inside the barrel and around the burn pile.

Baunach, a competitor in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, is also accused of failing to report a death to the medical examiner, cremating a body more than 48 hours after it was discovered, and destroying or concealing physical evidence.

Federal authorities discovered silencers in his home, leading to additional charges of possession of an unregistered weapon.

As of right now, he has zero bond and is being held in the Hendry County Jail. It has been reported by NBC News that a preliminary hearing will take place on October 20 or 21.
