Lazarus | North Korea

Episode 197,   Oct 16, 2022, 08:30 PM

A North Korean state-sponsored hacking organisation was believed to be behind cyber-attacks on Sony Pictures & The Bangladesh central bank.

In November 2014, Sony Pictures fell victim to a massive cyber-attack. This attack was in retaliation to the release of the film The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco – a comedy about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.
In February 2016, the central bank of Bangladesh suffered a similar attack. The meticulously planned cyber-heist spanned multiple countries, using different time zones, and leveraging public holidays and loopholes in country-specific laws. The FBI believed that a North Korean, state-sponsored, hacking organisation called The Lazarus Group was responsible for both cyber-attacks. But what can be done to stop them from doing it again?
