The government has allocated $10mln US to address humanitarian challenges caused by flooding in the country.

Vice President for Services Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol made the announcement in a statement yesterday to the UN General Assembly in New York.

In his address, VP Abdelbagi informed the assembly that up to 80% of the country has been affected by three consecutive years of flooding, with over 55.5% of the population severely food insecure.

The Vice President also called on the international community to lift targeted sanctions and an arms embargo on South Sudan, saying the restrictions, which have been in place since 2018, are a ‘disservice’ to the country.

The UN Security Council in May renewed an arms embargo and sanctions against South Sudan amid continuing unrest in the country.

Vice President Abdelbagi also spoke on the government’s response to COVID-19, climate change and regional and international issues.
