Police Find Mans Scalp In Bag, Wife Charged | True Crime Daily Brief

Episode 448,   Sep 17, 2022, 03:00 PM

As her murder trial was about to begin last week, a 71-year-old lady pleaded no guilty to charges related to the death of her husband.

According to documents filed in the York County Court, Virginia Hayden pled "nolo contendre" to third-degree murder and tampering with public information, and she faces six to twenty years in prison.

After Thomas Hayden Sr. went missing and was presumed dead, Hayden was first charged with more than 60 crimes, including first-degree murder, forgery, and other offenses. She has been charged with 14 counts of wire fraud for allegedly diverting over $113,000 in Social Security benefits from the account of her late spouse.

York Daily Record reports that on January 18, 2012, a walker on Conewago Road found a plastic FoodSaver bag containing "blood-stained goods, skin, and hair." The bag was sent to a DNA lab, where it remained unmatched until 2017, when Thomas' siblings submitted their own DNA samples.

The bag, according to the York Dispatch, held a scalp with the hair pulled back into a ponytail and a bloody sheet.

In 2017, Thomas Hayden's estranged daughter Kim Via reportedly reported him missing to the York Daily Record. Police reportedly charged his stepdaughter, Connie Lynn Pender, with tampering with public records as they probed his disappearance.

A similar story was purportedly made to a Pennsylvania State Trooper by Thomas's wife, Virginia, who said that in 2011, Thomas "had left Pennsylvania one night to seek medical treatment for ALS and never returned." Then she allegedly gave inconsistent accounts of why her spouse had supposedly left.

As the detectives dug more into Thomas and Virginia's lives, they discovered that Thomas had never received an ALS diagnosis. It has also been said that Virginia stated, "Because to me, he is," when asked why she said her husband had died.

A forensic pathologist testified at an earlier hearing, as reported by the York Daily Record, that Thomas was probably shot to death and that someone used a material to disintegrate his body.

Thomas's body, however, has yet to be located.
