Oscar Rewind: Les Misérables
Season 5, Episode 170, Sep 05, 2022, 01:00 PM
Les Misérables is an epic, sweeping musical. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway, a beloved community theatre production, and if you’ve ever seen the inside of an audition room, you’ve probably heard a gaggle of girls butchering On My Own or I Dreamed a Dream. It is a sung-through operatic style musical, so for this movie to have been a success all Tom Hooper needed was a cast that could sing. Instead, we got awkward close up of actors who can kind of hold a tune. The casting of this movie, save for Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit and Anne Hathaway, was probably the most egregious error made, and all others that followed were made worse by Hugh Jackman screaming the score at us.
