Period poverty in South Sudan

Episode 1906,   Mar 16, 2022, 08:51 AM

An estimated 70 percent of South Sudanese school going girls and women are experiencing period poverty. According to the Borgen Project, even though menstruation is a fact of life for most women, cultural practices prevent conversations about this subject. This means, many school going girls in South Sudan are not taught about menstruation and how to safely care for themselves.

A 2014 a Menstrual Hygiene baseline study conducted across the country found that 28 percent of young girls believe that menstruation is a disease.

Miraya breakfast this morning featured period poverty activists, who gave accurate information on the topic.
