The UN Security Council has voted to renew the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan by one year, to the 15th of March 2023. The resolution was adopted yesterday with 13 votes in favor, none against and 2 abstentions from China and Russia. The mandate maintains the four main pillars namely, the protection of civilians, creating the conditions conducive to the delivery of humanitarian assistance, Supporting the Implementation of the Revitalized Agreement and the Peace Process and Monitoring, investigating, and reporting on violations of international humanitarian law and violations and abuses of human rights. Speaking after the vote South Sudan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Akuei Bona Malwal, welcomed the extension but hoped that it would reintroduce active engagement of the international community in development projects.
